Four-time Champ Car Series champion Sebastien Bourdais has competed against Team Penske throughout his career and knows how it represents class and excellence in the sport.
With the dramatic news that Roger Penske and the Penske Corporation have purchased INDYCAR, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the Indianapolis 500 and IMS Productions from Hulman & Company, Bourdais believes it’s a great time to be an NTT IndyCar Series driver.
“Mark Miles (INDYCAR CEO) sent us the news ahead of time last Monday morning,” Bourdais told NTT INDYCAR Mobile. “Who is taking over is massive to our sport. Generations go back and Mari Hulman George and the foundation of her father, Tony Hulman, made to build up the Speedway and the Indianapolis 500 was great. Tony George created IndyCar and once Mari passed away last year, the family had to make a decision and I can understand that.
“Once Roger Penske came along and offered to acquire the whole thing, I think it became apparent it was evident to them that you can’t find anybody better than Roger Penske to take over. He can open doors with OEMs and sponsors and grow the sport.
“There is some sadness turning the page and the history of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Hulman George Family, but what an opportunity for our sport and the Speedway.”
Penske has a long record of success in both business and racing. He is the record-holder for most Indianapolis 500 victories as a team owner with 18 and most NTT IndyCar Series championships with 16.
Now that success will include the entire series, so this is a great time to be an IndyCar driver, according to Bourdais.
“I want to believe that good things are coming our way and for the series and a lot of people feel that way,” Bourdais said. “Sometimes, it doesn’t take much to put a positive spin and get people to believe in the concept and project and want to be a part of it.
“This has the potential to be the biggest thing to happen to IndyCar since its creation, really.”
Penske has said he will step away from the race team by getting down from the timing stand to spend more of his focus on INDYCAR should help the series on many aspects.
“I have way too much respect for Roger Penske to even believe he would turn the game into this advantage,” Bourdais said. “He loves the sport way too much. He is investing a ton into the sport to do what he loves to grow it.
“I don’t think there is any better person to handle that than Roger. His integrity and stature and personality, I don’t know any better business person at all.
“I think this is going to be great for INDYCAR, Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Indianapolis 500. I can’t wait to get started again.”

Why not ?
